A third new site in Sulaymaniyah is due to come into operation in the third quarter of this year. It will initially produce 450ml and 500ml cans, which according to the company are becoming increasingly popular in the market it serves.

The new plant will predominantly target domestic markets in Iraq and neighbouring countries, while also serving international customers. It will strengthen Royal Can’s foothold in both regional and global markets, according to Sherine Hmaied, WCP and training manager assistant.

Royal Can’s initial plant in Sulaymaniyah was the first to bring two-piece cans to the region, and produces slim, sleek and standard cans on two can production lines, with two additional lines dedicated to can ends. The plant expanded in 2014, and added a third line in 2016.

The company also has three production lines operating in Baghdad at the MEPAC branch. The new facility will add another can production line to the Kurdistan Region.

“We are actively exploring the expansion of our offerings to cater to a wider variety of beverages and product categories, from premium drinks to new can designs. Furthermore, we are increasing our focus on sustainability, which we see as a key driver for growth as consumer preferences evolve towards environmentally-friendly packaging solutions,” she told The Canmaker.

Hmaied said the company’s largest customers are spread across a range of regions, both internally within Iraq and externally across the Middle East and North Africa. “Key international markets for us include Turkey, Syria, Kazakhstan, and several countries in the Gulf and North Africa. This global reach highlights the trust our clients place in the quality of our products.”

A key recent development is the installation of a solar power system, which significantly contributes to reducing Royal Can’s environmental footprint and improving energy efficiency, she said. “This investment in renewable energy aligns with our commitment to sustainability and is a step forward in making our operations more environmentally responsible,” she said.

The latest news of expansion by Royal Can Company follows its acquisition of Middle East Packaging Materials Company (Mepac) plant in Baghdad in 2017.
